SMS Communications Privacy Policy

Kansas State AFL-CIO SMS Program

This privacy policy describes how the Kansas State AFL-CIO ("KS AFL-CIO," "we," "us," "our") collects, uses, and protects information from participants in our SMS text messaging program.

What Information We Collect

When you opt in to receive text messages from KS AFL-CIO by texting our member line at 785-329-9637, we collect:

  • Your mobile phone number
  • The date and time you opted in
  • Your mobile carrier information (automatically provided)
  • Message content you send to us

We do not collect your name, address, or other personal information through SMS unless you voluntarily provide it in your messages to us.

How We Use Your Information

We use your phone number to send you:

  • Legislative action alerts about bills and policies affecting workers
  • Information about union events, meetings, and solidarity campaigns
  • Responses to questions or requests you submit via text
  • General member communications from KS AFL-CIO

Message Frequency: Message frequency varies depending on legislative activity and organizing campaigns. You may receive 1-10 messages per month, with higher volume during active legislative sessions or urgent campaigns.

Message and Data Rates: Standard message and data rates from your mobile carrier may apply. We do not charge any fees to participate in our SMS program.

How We Protect Your Information

  • Your phone number is stored securely and is not shared with outside organizations without your explicit consent
  • We do not sell, rent, or trade your mobile phone number to third parties
  • We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information
  • Our SMS service provider (Twilio) complies with applicable telecommunications regulations and maintains appropriate data security practices

Your Rights and Choices

Opt Out: You can opt out of receiving text messages at any time by replying STOP to any message. You will receive one final confirmation message.
Help: Reply HELP to any message to receive assistance information, or contact us at jake@ksaflcio.org or 785.267.0100.
Opt Back In: If you opt out and later wish to receive messages again, text START to 785.329.9637 to re-enroll.

Data Retention

We retain your phone number and opt-in status for as long as you remain subscribed to our SMS program. After you opt out, we retain your number in our opt-out list to honor your preference and prevent re-enrollment. We may retain message content for operational purposes consistent with our organizational record retention policies.

Updates to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The current version will always be available at ksaflcio.org/privacy with the effective date noted at the top.
